If you are experiencing difficulties in managing your finances or protecting your interests as a result of a health condition, you can receive support from a guardian.
Guardianship for adults
As a guardian, you make a significant contribution to the life of another person. The objective of your assignment is to create the best possible quality of life for the person you are supporting.
The appointment typically involves:
- Managing finances
- Protecting rights and interests in dealings with authorities
- Arranging living arrangements
The appointment is voluntary, which means you are not employed. However, you are entitled to a reasonable fee for your services.
If you wish to become a guardian, you can register your interest by completing a form.
Application
You can apply for a guardian yourself, or have a close relative apply on your behalf.
The application should be submitted to the district court where you reside, accompanied by a completed application form and any necessary supporting documents.
Reporting a Need
If you, in your professional capacity or as a concerned individual, believe that someone requires a guardian, you can make a report to the guardianship authority in Stockholm.
When an application or report is received, the guardianship authority investigates the need and ensures that the guardian is performing their duties properly.
Being a guardian for minors
A guardian for minors is a person who represents a child under 18 years old in matters related to the child’s property and financial affairs.
Usually, both parents are guardians and are under the supervision of the guardianship board. If a guardian is unable to manage the child’s economy, the district court appoints a special guardian. The district court can also appoint a co-guardian.
